The Fredericksburg Flames U-16 hockey team continued a strong start to its Capital Beltway Hockey League season with a solid team effort to defeat the Rams of Navy, 4-1.
Traveling to McMullen Arena in Annapolis, Md., the Flames team followed up its previous 5-0 defeat of the Howard Huskies to improve its record to 2-0.
Skating on McMullen's Olympic-size sheet of ice, both teams seemed sluggish early, but the Flames began to establish some puck possession as the period progressed. With 6:05 remaining in the period, the Flames' Nathan Hughes opened the scoring by finishing off a nice feed from T.J. Corvetti.
The skating and hitting picked up toward the end of the period, which ended with the Flames enjoying a 1-0 lead. Shots on goal were almost even at 6-5 Flames.
Navy capitalized on a turnover at the Fredericksburg blue line 1:16 into the second period as one of the Rams picked up a loose puck and deposited it unassisted into the back of the Flames net.
At 6:59 and the game tied at one apiece, T.J. Garrity of Fredericksburg was whistled for interference and the Rams were on the power play. One minute and nine seconds later, at 5:50, aggressive penalty killing by the Flames allowed T.J. Corvetti to get loose behind the Rams' defense to net a shorthanded goal, putting the Flames up 2-1.
This was followed less than two minutes later by another Nathan Hughes tally at 3:55 while both teams were skating four-on-four with each team having a man in the penalty box. The period ended with the Flames up
3-1 while outshooting the Rams 10-4.
The third period started as the second had ended, both teams trading a few minor penalties and some scoring chances. The Flames defensemen, Denver Brandts, T.J. Garrity, Aaron Ranberger and Henry Britton, as well as newcomer to the team Sean Dever, stepped up the physical play and denied the Rams much space and any opportunity to ignite a comeback limiting them to four shots in the final frame.
Goaltender Nicole Vizzone was once again solid in net, stopping 12 of 13 Rams shots throughout the contest. At 5:53 of the third period, T.J. Corvetti capped the scoring, corralling a fine Sean Dever pass from behind the net and beating the Rams goaltender.
The Flames were then whistled for two consecutive penalties, 17 seconds apart putting the Rams up two skaters with 1:21 left in the game. A fine penalty killing effort marked by three solid hits by Nate O'Brien extinguished any hope of a Rams rally and the Flames skated out of McMullen with the victory.
The Flames next home game is a rematch with Navy on Sunday at 9:45 a.m.
